New Spells: Memory Magic

New Spells: Memory Magic

Today we're previewing two high-level memory spells to go along with the existing modify memory spell at 5th-level.

Sift Memory began with a realization that while the existing modify memory spell allowed a caster to change someone's memory even of the distant past, there were no spells that could enable the caster to see the target's memories. The best you could do was prompt them to remember while using detect thoughts, but this has obvious downsides and limitations. Sift memory is a truly invasive spell that can only be cast when the target has already been subdued or captured, since you must have them incapacitated for an entire minute to cast it. This is a great spell to use in lieu of lengthy interrogations or on unsuspecting sleeping victims -- just be careful you don't wake them!

And while the feeblemind spell can already be used to essentially remove a target's mind, a more surgical approach requires the new 9th-level spell Amnesia. This classic storytelling affliction is surprisingly absent from currently official D&D 5e material, so I decided it needed to be created. Why slay the evil villain when you can remove the evil villain's memories and then convince them to join your side? The role-playing potential of this impactful spell is so nearly limitless that its almost impossible to enumerate, but its worth noting that this concentration spell is also a potent combat tool for shutting down a single target -- just don't use it on a creature with legendary saves remaining!

We’re currently previewing content from The Impermissicon, a compendium planned to release in the first half of 2020 (hopefully the first quarter), which focuses on forbidden magic and dark forces! It will contain blood magic, lycanthropy, twisted curses, vampires, dark gods, fallen heroes, a large array of new forbidden spells, and even new prestige classes.
