Many players and dungeon masters have clamored for a psion class in 5th edition D&D. Even though Wizards of the Coast has attempted a few different forms of psion, none of them were advanced beyond Unearthed Arcana to the stages of official publication. To help fill that void, we present a psionic subclass for wizards. Alongside the other psionic-adjacent subclasses like the Aberrant Mind sorcerer, the Psi Warrior fighter, the Soul Knife rogue, or the Great Old One warlock, this wizard of the School of Psionics allows a group to create their full psionic teams from older editions of the Dungeons and Dragons game.

The subclass is intended to serve as a general-purpose intelligence-based psionic spellcaster. Accordingly, it is designed to be highly modular. Most of the subclass features present one of three options to the player, allowing them to specialize in either telekinesis, telepathy, or the sense-based power of clairvoyance. Each psionic wizard can choose different options, which combine with the myriad spell options for wizards to create a framework for building almost any kind of intelligence-based psion. Psionics in fiction can usually reproduce many forms of conventional magic using psychic powers such as cryokinesis, electrokinesis, pyrokinesis, and teleportation, and the Mental Studies feature allows psionic wizards to act just like the psions of past editions when they cast such such spells, wielding mental powers alongside a floating crystal or mysterious orb. A psionic wizard can also take the Telepathic or Telekinetic feats from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything if they wish to amplify their psionic flavor even further.

This subclass goes particularly well with psionic-themed spells such as telekinesis, catapult, telepathy, clairvoyance, detect thoughts, levitate, and the homebrew psychic spells previewed recently on this website. The upcoming and final D&D Unleashed compendium, Legends of Prestige & Prowess, will also bring a new spellcasting feat, Psychomancer, which allows a spellcaster to specialize even further into psionic-themed spells.
